Askari Game Lodge & Spa is situated on the Plumari Private Game Reserve in the Magaliesberg, just over an hour from Johannesburg or Pretoria and offers guests the opportunity to view the Big 5 within a malaria free environment. Plumari Private Game Reserve is set within a pristine wilderness area of over 5000 hectares with natural African bushveld and an abundance of flora, fauna, birdlife and wildlife. Two game drives, each approximately 2 – 2,5 hours in duration, are scheduled daily. Elephant interaction includes an educational talk followed by a ‘touch and feed’ experience. The main lodge, which is in fact the old Bodenstein family farmhouse, overlooks the Elephant Dam and invites guests to take a step back in time while admiring South African décor pieces dating back to the 1800’s. Askari Game Lodge & Spa has one of the largest private collections of ox wagons, carts and other animal drawn vehicles from the period 1800 to 1900. A variety of stone and iron-age arte facts, items from the Boer War and San Bushmen rock carvings tell the history of the area, which is also known for the nearby Battle of Nooitgedacht. Examples are available in the museum and guided bush walks take guests through areas where many stone carvings can be found.

The Black Rhino Game Lodge is on the western side of the malaria free, ‘Big Five’ Pilanesberg National Park of South Africa’s North West Province, the Lodge provides a beautiful bushveld getaway.

Unlike any other national game park, the Pilanesberg hosts a combination of animal, bird, insect, reptilian and vegetation species, such as the Brown Hyena, Springbok, Red Eyed Bulbul and Camel Thorn tree. The Pilanesberg National Park is the perfect combination of the Kalahari and the wetter Lowveld. A major advantage of the Pilanesberg is that it is ‘Malaria Free’, which is not the case with other game parks further north. Sun City, best known for hosting the Million Dollar Golf Challenge and other spectacular events, lies on the border of the Pilanesberg, and is only a 33 km drive from the Black Rhino Game Reserve.

These species are normally found in dry areas, co-habitat with Impala, Black Eyed Bulbul and the Cape Chestnut trees are normally found in wetter areas. Game walks

Kwa Maritane offers many exciting ways for you to view the fauna and flora of the Pilanesberg National Park. Engage in the various game viewing activities we offer such as: game drives, game walks, the hide, the deck, the hide camera, bird walks and tree walks.

Junior Rangers Programme

With various activities to take part in including game drives, bush walks, picnicking and more, Kwa Maritane and Bakubung have developed something even more engaging, the Junior Rangers Programme.

Game drives

In the evenings, guests are taken on a game drive, which brings you a lot closer to the big game. The animals are habituated to the vehicle, which means that they are used to the vehicle approaching them and know that it never causes them harm. This enables you to get within five to 10 metres of the larger predators, even while they're feasting on a recent kill.

Reptile demonstrations

Get a grip on your fear as our ranger shows off these wonderful creatures. Bookings are essential and to be made at the Wildlife Centre. Subject to snakes behavioural patterns and weather dependent.

Stargazing

Come on a warp through space and join the guides on the helipad for a look at the stars (weather permitting). Bookings are essential and can be made at the Wildlife Centre.

Bush boma dinners

Enjoy a traditional South African braai, served under the African skies at our Bush Boma every Saturday and Wednesday. Subject to weather and numbers.

Table tennis

Come and play an enticing game of table tennis. Equipment can be found at our reception.

Lush is a contemporary lodge, shaped around the environment. In fact, it is a shepherd’s tree – sheltered from the wind and warmed by the morning sun, between hill and plain – that marked the position of the main lodge. Its minimalistic décor and natural finishes put the focus on the view, which at once draws you outside. With this in mind, multi-level interior-flowing-to-exterior spaces are designed for outdoor living. Spend time between safari activities reading or playing board games on the couches, sipping coffee in the bar lounge – a favourite spot to rendezvous at any time of day – or stargazing from the deck.

Activities in and around Morokolo Safari Lodge

The Black Rhino Reserve forms part of the Greater Pilanesberg National Park measuring 57 000 hectares. Situated in the north western corner of the Pilanesberg National Park, The Black Rhino Reserve is just under 2 500 hectares in size and represents the first portion of private land incorporated into the Pilanesberg National Park. It is a private concession with its own entrance on the north-western side of the park.

Elephant, buffalo and a variety of antelope often roam in this area as they take shelter in remote areas not accessible to other visitors to Pilanesberg National Park. Characterised by a beautiful forest of Tamboti trees and occasional sightings of the bad tempered Black Rhino, the Black Rhino Reserve is home to the BIG 5 (Lion, Leopard, Buffalo, Elephant, White & Black Rhino) as well as a wide variety of antelope species (including Sable, Tsetsebe, Eland, Kudu and Springbok) and the rare sightings of wild dog.

With a species list of over 354, the Black Rhino Reserve is also a true "birders paradise".

On-site Activities

Two professionally-guided Big 5 vehicle safaris (included in the room rates) each day will keep you in awe of the splendid natural beauty of the Black Rhino Reserve and the Pilanesberg National Park. Elephants, rhinos, lions, leopards, buffalo, wild dogs, kudus, wildebeest, warthogs and spring hares are but a few of the more commonly seen animals.

Walking safaris are available. The walk focuses on locating and observing the inhabitants of the Black Rhino Game Reserve from a different angle - on foot. This lower lying reserve’s sweet veld vegetation complements the Pilanesberg’s predominantly mixed sour veld. This type of habitat is known to carry a wide variety of game species and sightings of elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard. There are over 350 bird species present. The reserve has its own private entrance on the Western side of the reserve.

The reserve is characterized by huge numbers of Tambuti trees and therefore we have regular sightings of the shy and scarce black rhino. These trees also play host to an incredibly wide variety of bird species thus making the area a birding paradise.

4x4 Game Drives

We pride ourselves on presenting wildlife interaction that is sure to be the highlight of your stay. The game drives are daily and our experienced ranger will take you on a memorable trip introducing you to the tracks, movements, sights and sounds which give you a peak into the secrets of the African bush – guests can expect to encounter a diverse range of animal and bird species on our game drives. Children are permitted on drives at the discretion of the game ranger.

The Pilanesberg is situated in the transition zone between the Kalahari and Lowveld, making it exceptional for spotting all kinds of wildlife. The ecology of the national park is unlike any other in the country, and almost every animal native to South Africa is found here.

Pilanesberg National Park

The Pilanesberg National Park is 55 000 Hectares in extent and borders on the Sun City entertainment complex. The most remarkable feature of this destination is the 1200 million-year old volcano crater with Mankwe Lake in the centre. Because of its positioning between the Kalahari and Lowveld, the vegetation from both areas are located on this terrain. The Pilanesberg National Park is native to all species of animals that naturally occur in this region of South Africa including the big five, wild dog, and rarer species such as Brown Hyena, Tsessebe and Aardwolf. The Park also offers a number of picnic spots, numerous hides for game watching, a walk in aviary, safari game drives and hot air balloon flights over the park.

Thutlwa Safari Lodge gets its name from the Tswana word for giraffe. These elegant animals are always a pleasure to observe whether they are chewing away at their leafy greens or bending down to drink water. Inspired by the grace and carriage of these beautiful animals, Thutlwa Safari Lodge lends itself to relaxation in the heart of the bush, with attention paid to even the smallest detail.

At Thutlwa, we strive to offer you as much fluidity during your stay as possible – with no restrictive itineraries and no time limits. You are also welcome to bring young children and toddlers along on game drives – unlike most lodges that cater to the wider public.

The formal lounge is an area where you can relax and read, or head to the bar area for a few drinks. There are both wine and beverage fridges available for you to utilize on a self-stock basis.

The boma and braai area joins onto a large thatched lapa which offers casual seating and a large dining table for alfresco dining. If you’re not up for the afternoon game drive, spend your time lounging around the pool with a good book, or take a stroll to the thatched viewing-hide a few meters away. The lodge is surrounded by an electrified fence to keep you safe from the Big 5 animals that are regularly spotted in the area.

Take to the crystal-clear, blue water of the pool after a game drive, before enjoying an evening of stargazing, sipping drinks around the fire, and listening to the sounds of the African bush at night.

While Thutlwa Safari Lodge is available exclusively – guests can rest assured that a member of staff is on the premises 24 hours a day. The lodge is serviced daily for our guests’ convenience

Shop in advance or do some last-minute provision shopping at the nearby convenience store.

Malaria-Free Area

If you’re looking to travel with young children or babies, the Black Rhino Game Reserve (as well as the greater Pilanesberg area) is a safe option as it’s one of the few Big 5 bushland areas deemed malaria-free.

ABOUT THE BLACK RHINO GAME RESERVE
Black Rhino is a private game reserve that forms an additional ‘corner’ on the Pilanesberg National Park. It is on the North West side of the Pilanesberg, with its own secured, private entrance that is situated on the western side of the reserve. While ecological conditions at Black Rhino are very similar to that of  Pilanesberg, a noticeable difference is the sweet veld vegetation which complements Pilanesberg’s predominantly mixed sour veld.

Lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, rhino (black and white) and the endangered African wild dog all roam free on the reserve. Welcome to Big 5 country! Antelope species to try and tick-off your sightings list include eland, sable, impala, gemsbok, tsessebe as well as springbok.

If you’re up for a challenge, keep your eyes peeled for the less popular ‘small 5’, namely the elephant shrew, the antlion, the buffalo weaver, the leopard tortoise and the rhino beetle.

As per the Lodges’ namesake giraffes are also abundant on this reserve. There are over 354 bird species waiting to be spotted and identified by those avid bird enthusiasts.

ACCESS TO PILANESBERG NATIONAL PARK
The Black Rhino Game Reserve has established traversing rights with the North West Parks and Tourism Board whereby the privately-owned lodges within the Black Rhino Game Reserve are entitled to cross from the Black Rhino Game Reserve into the Pilanesberg National Park.

This allows you to enjoy the privacy of the reserve along with the richness of the national park, and to experience the abundant sights and sounds of the bush from the comfort of Thutlwa’s 10-seater, open safari vehicle.

  • From Johannesburg or Pretoria take the N4 west
  • Turn off onto the R556 north towards Sun City

African Dining
Buffet style breakfasts and light lunches are served on the thatched veranda and showcase South African dishes prepared from fresh local ingredients. Evening buffet dinners are often enjoyed seated around a roaring fire in the African Boma, under the stars. Traditional venison dishes also feature on this authentic South African menu.

The Rooms
Provision has been made in certain units to accommodate the access of wheelchairs facilitating the disabled or elderly.

Each of the 17 spacious en-suite air-conditioned units is equipped with a shower, minibar, coffee and tea-making facilities as well as a safe and hairdryer. Amenities are replenished daily.

Swimming Pool
Recliners under a canopy of thatch beckon guests to enjoy shady relaxation around the pool, which is also a prime vantage point for game viewing. A waterhole lies just beyond the perimeter of the Lodge and attracts various antelope species, elephant and buffalo. Indulge in the peacefulness of the African Bush while our trained staff brings you your favourite cocktail to enjoy.
