Up-close encounter with some of the world's most fascinating wildlife
Black Rhino Game Lodge offers a variety of safari activities that allow guests to experience the beauty and wildlife of Africa. Game viewing is one of the most popular activities on an African safari, providing visitors with an opportunity to see and photograph a wide variety of wildlife in their natural habitat.
Game Drives
During a game drive, visitors will typically ride in open-sided 4x4 vehicles, led by experienced guides who are knowledgeable about the area and its wildlife. Early morning and late afternoon game drives are the most popular, as these times offer the best chances of spotting wildlife when they are most active.

 Walking Safaris
Our guided walking safaris are bookable at R 2 160 per person with no children under 16 years of age allowed on the walks. The guided walks are done in lieu of the morning game drives, with a minimum of 4 guests required per walk, and are bookable directly with the lodge reception upon arrival.
Night Drives
Night drives provide visitors with the unique and exciting opportunity to see South African nocturnal wildlife in their natural habitat. After dinner drives are bookable directly with the lodge reception at the cost of R 500.00 per person per drive, subject to availability, with no children under 12 years of age allowed on the night drives.
African Cultural Dancing

 Unique Heritage
African cultural dancing is an important aspect of African culture, with a rich history that spans many different traditions and regions.
African cultural dancing is often characterized by its rhythmic and energetic movements, with dancers using their entire bodies to express themselves. African dancing has significant social and cultural significance, often to mark important events and celebrations such as weddings, harvest festivals, and religious ceremonies. Many African cultural dances have spiritual significance, with dancers invoking ancestral spirits and other supernatural forces through their movements.

The Pilanesberg offers unique safari experiences throughout the year, with each season bringing its own highlights and considerations.
| Summer (October – March): | Winter (April – September): |
| Summer in the Pilanesberg is marked by warmer temperatures, ranging from 26°C to 30°C, and more frequent rainfall, with the region receiving around 622mm during this period. While the landscape becomes lush and green, which is ideal for photography, the dense vegetation can make wildlife harder to spot. Nonetheless, summer offers beautiful scenery and the opportunity to see young animals born after the rains. |
In winter, controlled burns may occur in certain areas of the park as part of veld management. These are carefully monitored and essential to maintaining the ecological balance. Winter is also a particularly good time to spot lions, as they tend to be less cautious and more visible during the day. |

Every Meal is a
Delicious And Memorable Celebration
Dining, which is as much a part of your safari experience
as the safari itself, provides you with the gourmet Big Five: Safari
halt. Breakfast. Lunch. Tea in the afternoon. Dinner.
RESTAURANT SHONGOLOLO IS
A GOURMET ADVENTURE
A Gourmet Adventure Awaits
From start to completion, dining at Restaurant Shongololo
is a gourmet adventure. Guests are served various dishes in theatrical
settings, sparking all their senses and making the dining experience
thrilling and interactive.
To get to the gallery and the restaurant beyond, you must first visit a
modern grange’s veranda. Mbazo House was deliberately
constructed to set the tone for Restaurant Shongololo’s
elegant dining experience. It was named after the Great Kruger Tusker,
which inspired architect Francois van der Westhuizen’s
dramatic modern safari style. Dining at Shongololo is a delicious
adventure from start to finish with an emphasis on traditional African
flavours. Guests are offered a variety of foods in theatrical settings,
which stimulate all of their senses and make the eating experience
exciting and participatory.
Restaurant Shongololo is only open for lunch to non-resident guests on
occasion, depending on availability. Lunch appointments can be made up
to three months in advance. Please contact the staff at

AN AUTHENTIC
DINING EXPERIENCE
Flavours Inspired by the
Traditions of Africa
With the addition of Restaurant Shongololo to the Mbazo dining guest
experience, the culinary traditions, ingredients, and regional produce
of the Northwest Province are the shining stars on a seasonal menu that
is rooted not only in the remote and dramatic landscapes of
Pilanesberg, but also in the resourceful and creative people of this
remote, undiscovered region.
This seasonal menu was inspired not only by the dramatic landscapes of
Pilanesberg, the culture of the people and the traditional African
flavours of the region. The launch of Shongololo on the reserve has
reinforced the culinary relationship between African-born Executive
Chef Mpumeleleo and the Mbazo family. As part of its journey toward
greater sustainability, Mbazo’s dedication to celebrating
local origin, tradition, and culture makes it the ideal location for
the renowned chef’s first home-town restaurant.
Celebrate
Southern Africa Under the Stars
At Restaurant Shongololo, the dining experience places a strong
emphasis on the telling of stories. Chef Mike collaborated with
Mbazo’s culinary artist, The Don, and pastry chef Gladness to
conduct extensive study on traditional African flavours, historical
cuisines, and cultural practices over the course of several years.
The restaurant’s seasonal multi-course menu draws its
inspiration from the use of locally sourced ingredients and sustainable
purchasing practises. The Stargazing Gallery at Shongololo, which is
positioned a few metres above the Tambotie Forest in the Pilanesberg
Game Reserve, is the centrepiece of this modest design.
Our job is to ensure that a celebration reflects a client’s
style, taste, vision, and yes – even their dreams. This
belief has served us well for more than 40 years, and we have remained
on the edge of culinary creativity, constantly refining ourselves and
our food to make dreams become reality.
STRONG EMPHASIS
ON STORYTELLING
Executive Chef Mpumelelo
At
Restaurant Shongololo, the dining experience transcends mere meals;
it’s a captivating narrative that pays homage to the rich
cultural practices of the region. Our Executive Chef Mpumelelo,
affectionately known as Chef Mike, is the storyteller behind each dish.
Positioned at the intersection of tradition, culture, and
sustainability, Mbazo’s commitment to celebrating local
origins aligns seamlessly with Chef Mpumeleleo’s vision for
his first hometown restaurant. This collaboration is a testament to the
shared values that elevate Shongololo to be more than just a dining
experience—it’s a culinary journey grounded in
heritage and sustainability.

Activities in and around Morokolo Safari Lodge

One professionally-guided Big 5 vehicle safaris (included in the room rates) each day will keep you in awe of the splendid natural beauty of the Black Rhino Reserve and the Pilanesberg National Park. Elephants, rhinos, lions, leopards, buffalo, wild dogs, kudus, wildebeest, warthogs and spring hares are but a few of the more commonly seen animals.
Walking safaris are available. The walk focuses on locating and observing the inhabitants of the Black Rhino Game Reserve from a different angle - on foot. Guests are accompanied by a qualified guide who will share his/her extensive knowledge and experience on both fauna and flora. Excursions depart in the early morning, or early afternoon..

Valley of Waves at Sun City: Fun, fun, fun for the whole family! The Valley of Waves at Sun City is the most advanced Water Park in South Africa and provides hours of entertainment beneath the warm South African sun. The Roaring Lagoon is the centre of the park - and a regular 1.2 metre wave is generated and crashes on the white sandy beach. Surrounding the lagoon a meandering river allows for a wonderful scenic tube-ride and, for adrenaline seekers there are five exhilarating water-rides to choose from including the Temple of Courage.
Golf: Sun City can lay claim to having two of the best golf courses in Africa. Both courses were designed by well-known Gary Player and offer challenging courses in extremely scenic surroundings. The Lost City Golf Course is a unique experience and offers spectacular views across the bushveld. Also to be noted is the use of bunkers and extensive water features - and at the 13th hole 38 crocodiles await. The par 72 course at the Gary Player Country Club is home to the annual Nedbank Golf Challenge and the tree lined course is a challenge to both novices and professionals. The pro-shop, putting green and health spa are open 7-days a week.
Quad biking, clay pigeon shooting and archery: only 35km from the lodge in the Sun City complex, go and search for adventure and wildlife on a four-wheeler, encountering natural obstacles on the trail. Or blast away at clays with a 12-gauge shotgun! Or try your hand at the ancient sport of archery with modern day equipment.

Amenities

If you are aged 6 years or older, and if you have dreams of
becoming a game ranger just like our very ‘smart’
Mziki game rangers, why not ask mom and dad to enrol you in
Mziki’s Mini-Ranger programme.
From vehicle preparation and inspections, to identifying different
animal calls and sounds, recognising different trees and their uses to
tracking and navigating you will soon know all there is to know to
become a top-class game ranger. At the end of the programme you will
even receive a certificate to say that you have completed the
mini-ranger programme and have your photo taken which will then be
added to the Mziki Wall of Fame.
The Mziki Mini-Ranger programme is tailor-made according to age and the
duration of your stay and even better news is that it is free of charge.
You can also look forward to the following:
Camp treasure hunt:
A fun experience where you will have to find and collect specific items
around the lodge. There will be clues for you to solve and items that
you will have to identify with the help of the rangers.
Cultural experience:
Our game rangers will also tell you more about the
“Bushmen” (Khoisan) people of southern Africa and
their origins. Make sure to ask lots of questions!
Teacking
Learn how to identify the numerous spoor that the African bush has to
offer. Quiz:
Listen carefully at everything that the rangers tell you.
At the end of the programme there will be a fun quiz.
Listen carefully at everything that the rangers tell you. At the end of
the programme there will be a fun quiz.

Birders will delight in Mziki Safari Lodge’s excellent bird-watching opportunities. Bordering the 2,000-hectare Vaalkop Dam, considered one of the top three birding areas in the country, Mziki Private Game Reserve is home to several hundred species of birds. The mighty Hex river runs through the reserve and into the dam on which Mziki guests can enjoy barge cruises to get up close and personal to the birdlife.

Take your aim and try your hand at archery, available within the safe confines of Mziki Safari Lodge. A target and bows and arrows are provided for willing archers seeking to perfect their targeting skills.

The mighty Hex river flows through Mziki Safari Reserve providing over 8km of river frontage through the reserve. A particular highlight among guests is the convivial Mama Hippo barge cruises that Mziki Safari Lodge offers along Hex river into the Vaalkop dam. Depending on the water levels, guests can enjoy a different encounter with the African bushveld, this time from the water’s side, watching the crocodile and water birds go about the daily business while enjoying are refreshing drink.
(Barge cruise is water level and hyacinth plant dependent. Please inquire about water levels and hyacinth.)

Get up close and personal to the bush as you accompany one of our knowledgeable rangers on a bush walk to observe unobstructed wildlife behaviour. Visit areas that cannot be explored by vehicle and gain first-hand knowledge of some of Africa’s hidden secrets on foot, surrounded by the cheerful chattering of birds.

Home to three of the Big Five – Elephant, Buffalo and Rhino – Mziki Safari Lodge offers a malaria-free environment in which families can enjoy safari viewing in a safe, comfortable and relaxed environment. habitat is known to carry a wide variety of game species and sightings
of elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard. There are over 350 bird
species present. The reserve has its own private entrance on the

expect to encounter a diverse range of animal and bird species on our
game drives. Children are permitted on drives at the discretion of the
game ranger. The Pilanesberg is situated in the transition zone between the Kalahari and Lowveld, making it exceptional for spotting all kinds of wildlife. The ecology of the national park is unlike any other in the country, and almost every animal native to South Africa is found here. |
Pilanesberg
National Park
The Pilanesberg National Park is 55 000 Hectares in extent and borders on the Sun City entertainment complex. The most remarkable feature of this destination is the 1200 million-year old volcano crater with Mankwe Lake in the centre. Because of its positioning between the Kalahari and Lowveld, the vegetation from both areas are located on this terrain. The Pilanesberg National Park is native to all species of animals that naturally occur in this region of South Africa including the big five, wild dog, and rarer species such as Brown Hyena, Tsessebe and Aardwolf. The Park also offers a number of picnic spots, numerous hides for game watching, a walk in aviary, safari game drives and hot air balloon flights over the park.

Included in the package is 2 x 2.5 hr Guided game drives per day on a Private Safari Vehicle.

Thutlwa Safari Lodge gets its name from the Tswana word
for giraffe. These elegant animals are always a pleasure to observe
whether they are chewing away at their leafy greens or bending down to
drink water. Inspired by the grace and carriage of these beautiful
animals, Thutlwa Safari Lodge lends itself to relaxation in the heart
of the bush, with attention paid to even the smallest detail.
At Thutlwa, we strive to offer you as much fluidity during your stay as
possible – with no restrictive itineraries and no time
limits. You are also welcome to bring young children and toddlers along
on game drives – unlike most lodges that cater to the wider
public.
The lodge has been designed with large families and groups in mind. The
open-plan design lends itself to that
‘home-away-from-home’ feeling, with all the
necessary creature comforts one could expect from a luxurious,

up close. Each bush walk is led by a highly qualified, enthusiastic,
Game Guide ensuring guests safely experience this unique experience.
Depending on their age, young children will join in open game drive
vehicles for safety reasons. Guests will kick-start the day with
steaming hot coffee and homemade rusks, before venturing out at around
6:30 am. At around 8:00 am guest return to sit down to a sumptuous
breakfast buffet.
Game Drives
Our highly skilled Game Guides will accompany guests in the morning and
early evening in open 4x4 game drive vehicles. Their extensive
knowledge and training ensures that your game experience will be
unforgettable, exciting and informative. This private reserve is known
for its close encounters with a vast variety of game including the Big
Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino). In addition, all
game drives on the reserve coordinate their game viewing activities
which ensure the best of sightings. Halfway through the early evening
game drive there's a stop for sundowners and snacks, before returning
to the lodge at around 7:00 pm, with enough time to freshen up before
sitting down to a buffet dinner served in the open air boma (weather
permitting).
Activity time table will vary in summer and winter months.
Avid bird watchers will not be disappointed when visiting
the Pilanesberg. The park is home to almost 360 species of birds which
can be enjoyed all year round, although the best time for viewing is
from November to April when the migrant species have returned. The
variety of habitats available to these birds range from grasslands,
rocky outcrops, woodlands, and dams which is why the variety of species
is so vast.
Just a short walk from the main deck, down the cobbled
pathways of the lodge, will bring you to the swimming pool, a place of
refuge from the hot African sun. Encircled with reed walls to maintain
privacy and adorned with umbrellas and loungers to recline on, this
space offers guests the perfect retreat to take a dip in the cool,
clear water or soak up the sun while enjoying a good book. Refreshments
and snacks can be offered poolside too, ensuring you have a truly lazy
afternoon to just enjoy yourself.
One of the most charming dining experiences Tshukudu has
on offer is a short trip into the African bush where our guests can
immerse themselves in nature while dining under the stars. With the
fireplace as your centerpiece, expect to be served a starter of warm
soup, followed by a traditional South African braai (barbeque) buffet,
plated dessert, and an assorted cheeseboard to conclude.
As the meal comes to an end and the moon makes its way across the
near-midnight sky, allow our rangers to entertain you for a little
longer as they share an assortment of authentic African stories, fables
and legends. This is a truly unforgettable experience and not to be
missed. Group bookings essential.
Apart from the bush walk and the 4x4 safari game drives offered by
Tshukudu Game Lodge, the following additional activities and
attractions are available in the Hoedspruit area of Limpopo:Blyde River
Dam boat cruises

Surrounded by over 3800 hectares of undisturbed BIG 5 Game Reserve and
the famous Drakensberg Mountains Tshukudu Game Lodge provides a relaxed
home away from home. Welcome drinks are served in the open plan
reception- and lounge area on arrival and our free Wi-Fi service is
available to all stay-over guests should you wish to connect with
family and friends back home.
Buffet style breakfasts and light lunches are served on the thatched
veranda and showcase South African dishes prepared from fresh local
ingredients. Evening buffet dinners are often enjoyed seated around a
roaring fire in the African Boma, under the stars. Traditional venison
dishes also feature on this authentic South African menu.
One queen size bed, fireplace, sunken bath, shower over bath,
fully-stocked mini-bar, tea/caffe making facilities, standard amenities
and a balcony overlooking the savannah and waterhole.
One extra length king size bed, open plan lounge with fireplace,
fully-stocked mini-bar, tea/coffe making facilities, standard
amenities, luxurious bath overlooking the plains, twin
vanities, private plunge pool, secluded decks and outdoor shower.
Not your regular curio shop, you will find original treasures that have
been gathered from all corners of the African continent as well as
functional items such as hats, caps, beanies and T-shirts as well as
postcards, toiletries, international plugs and various small trinkets
that will remind you of your African Safari.
Keep clothing colours as neutral and as light as possible, so you blend
in better with the surrounding environment. Khaki, beige, brown and
green are generally best, as darker and brighter colours attract
unwanted mosquitoes and insects.
During certain times of the year malaria may be more prevalent in
certain areas and we therefore suggest a mosquito repellent like
Peaceful Sleep or something similar. Alternatively contact your local
GP regarding the necessity of malaria prophylaxis.
A pair of comfortable walking shoes for bush walks or when off the game
drive vehicle.
Meals are informal, so smart attire is not required.

Just a short walk from the main deck, down the cobbled pathways of the
lodge, will bring you to the swimming pool, a place of refuge from the
hot African sun. Encircled with reed walls to maintain privacy and
adorned with umbrellas and loungers to recline on, this space offers
guests the perfect retreat to take a dip in the cool, clear water or
soak up the sun while enjoying a good book. Refreshments and snacks can
be offered poolside too, ensuring you have a truly lazy afternoon to
just enjoy yourself.

The main deck area boasts some of the best views from the lodge and is
a communal gathering point to share a meal, a sundowner or take up a
pair of binoculars and watch the game roam freely beyond. The deck
consists of a comfortable lounge area, fully stocked bar, firepit and
set just behind it, lies the interior dining room for rainy or cool
winter evenings.

Tshukudu’s Dining Room and Lounge is set just off the main
deck area and is a cozy nook for guests to dine inside on cool or rainy
days. Adorned with a hand crafted, solid-wood table with seating for up
to 20 guests, this is the perfect place to enjoy meals as a group.
Renowned for our exceptional African cuisine, meticulously prepared by
our chef, guests can expect an incredible degustation experience
starting at breakfast and ending the day with a full five-course dinner.

One of the most charming dining experiences Tshukudu has on offer is a
short trip into the African bush where our guests can immerse
themselves in nature while dining under the stars. With the fireplace
as your centerpiece, expect to be served a starter of warm soup,
followed by a traditional South African braai (barbeque) buffet, plated
dessert, and an assorted cheeseboard to conclude.
As the meal comes to an end and the moon makes its way across the
near-midnight sky, allow our rangers to entertain you for a little
longer as they share an assortment of authentic African stories, fables
and legends. This is a truly unforgettable experience and not to be
missed. Group bookings essential.
